Rosanna Leo’s Darke Passion (Dark Paranormal Investigations Book 1)

I am THRILLED to be part of Rosanna Leo’s cover reveal for Darke Passion! I adore her contemporary romance Handymen series. If you’re not familiar with Rosanna, she writes both contemporary and paranormal romance. Her novel A Reluctant Attraction, Handymen 3, is one of Oprah Daily’s 50 of 2021’s Most Anticipated Romance Novels.

I love her Handymen series to pieces. Not only are her characters compelling and their attraction off the charts but she also deals with such weighty subjects as PTSD and trauma in a realistic and healing manner. So you can imagine my excitement over the Darke Investigations series!! I can’t wait to read Darke Passion!

What’s New in 2022: It’s a Party and You’re All Invited!

I don’t know about you, but somehow the end of the year snuck up on me without my realizing it. Life got crazy there for a while, and I never got around to making my EOY post, which is fine because I hate doing those kinds of reflective summaries anyway. I never seem to have been as productive or as successful as I might have hoped, you know?

Most of you who follow this blog know I like to create a power word or phrase for the coming year, and that looks like it will be a bust this year as well. I chose fearless for 2019. It was audacious for 2020. Resilent for 2021. I think maybe it’s time to retire power words for a while, don’t you?

I had a Tarot reading done for 2021 heading into 2022. The Tower and Judgement cards were major players in my life in 2021 (sadly, this could apply pretty much to every year since 2016), with the Devil and the Fool being factors in the upcoming year. I can overcome if I play to my strengths and ditch my issues with self-confidence and self-sabotage. Sounds ominous? I think so, too. šŸ˜‰

I was recently exposed to Covid through the workplace, which led to a scramble to get tested. I’m negative at the moment, but isolating from my high-risk family members to be on the safe side.

All in all, I’m surprised I’ve gotten anything accomplished this month!

But the good news is I finished the draft of the second Ginny Reese book: The Dog Days of Murder! It’s off to editing soon. Look for a release date late winter, early spring! If you are signed up for my newsletter, you’ll get a sneak peek at the cover before everyone else! The gang’s all there: Ginny, her dog Remy, Ming the Merciless, the Siamese cat, as well as the cast of characters living in Greenbrier, including her mother, the indomitable Julia Reese! Ginny’s plans to open her own vet practice go awry when a newcomer swoops into town with mysterious financial backing AND a connection to Joe. Of course, this new veterinarian winds up getting murdered, right? šŸ™‚

I did a fun interview with Marcia James about pets in books and why I include them. Be sure to check it out and see some great pictures!

Tomorrow, I’m participating in a big release day bash for Kerry Blaisell’s latest release, Damning the Dead. There’s going to be a Facebook party with 13 other authors, with games and prizes galore. Not only are you invited, but you should invite your friends too! It’s Jan 5 from 4-7:30 Pacific Standard Time, so be sure to join us!! Join the group now so you won’t miss a thing!

Here’s the schedule:

Schedule of participating authors:
  • Jeff D. Ellis ~ 4:00 PM PACIFIC TIME
  • Bob Herold ~ 4:15 PM PACIFIC TIME
  • Tena Stetler ~ 4:30 PM PACIFIC TIME
  • Dan Rice ~ 4:45 PM PACIFIC TIME
  • McKenna Dean ~ 5:00 PM PACIFIC TIME
  • Hunter Skye ~ 5:15 PM PACIFIC TIME

  • Sally Brandle ~ 7:00 PM PACIFIC TIME

And now that I’ve finished the second Ginny Reese book, it’s time for me to go back to Bishop and Knight’s story. When we last left them, Rhett and Peter had become very close, but they’d also been fired from Redclaw and hired by the competition: Rian Stirling! We all know that Rian has his eye on Rhett as well, so this doesn’t bode well for our intrepid duo. Sometimes, however, you must form an alliance with an enemy to defeat a more powerful adversary. No spoilers, but we’ll find out the source of all those mysterious artifacts and why the planet has been seeded with them…

Maybe I should chose a power word after all. How does confidence sound? šŸ™‚

An Embarrassment of Itches: New Cozy Mystery by M.K. Dean

It’s here! And owing to a colossal mistake, it’s live instead of only available for pre-order. Because I am SO excited about this release, An Embarrassment of Itches is only 99 cents AND available on Kindle Unlimited for the next three months!

It’s Diagnosis Murder meets All Creatures Great and Small…

As a house-call vet, Ginny Reese has seen her share of the weird and wacky. But nothing in her previous experience could have prepared her to find one of her clients floating in her own swimming pool.

Local artist Amanda Kelly was extremely wealthy with her share of secrets. By naming Ginny as her heir, not only did she make Ginny the number one suspect, but she painted a big bull’s eye on her friend’s back as well.

With her trusty German Shepherd at her side, it’s up to Ginny to find the real killer and prove her innocence to the sheriff. The new sheriff. Who happens to be her ex.

Piece of cake, right?

But I had this great launch party planned with gift baskets and prizes galore–all my pre-marketing plans for this book got scuttled with the early release. So I could really use your help in spreading the word!

Stay tuned for more information on the post-launch party and how you can get in on the fun!

Most of my social media platforms will remain the same, but if you’d like to follow the M.K. Dean Facebook page, it’s here. Also, here’s M.K. Dean on Amazon!

Brushed By Betrayal by L.A. Sartor: Spotlight and Interview

Please welcome author L.A. Sartor to the blog as we showcase her upcoming release (available for pre-order) Brushed by Betrayal!

Hello! Welcome to my blog and thank you for answering my nosy, I mean discerning, questions. šŸ™‚  First, please tell us a little about yourself and the kinds of stories you like to write. Would you say there is an underlying theme behind your stories?

McKenna, thank you for having me as a return guest on your amazing blog.  Interesting questions you pose. Iā€™ve been writing for a long time, yet only very recently discovered that I am truly a plot-driven writer. I was told this by a veteran of 40+ novels, and at first, I was insulted. Then I stepped back and looked at her criteria and realized with an enormous amount of relief that indeed I was. My stories always revolve around complex plots, at the same time I weave the theme of trust and/or finding oneā€™s real path in life. Usually they go hand-in-hand. But I think of the creating the plot question first, then building the characters to work in it.

There is nothing wrong in either being either a plot or character driven writer, and we authors can have readers who love both. But finding my own true writer calling made a big difference. I write romance into my stories, but they are mostly not ā€œromances.ā€ (I do have a couple of pure romances.)

What part of the world do you call home? Can you tell us a little about where you grew up and where you live now?

Colorado is now home. I was adopted in Germany as was my brother, different birth families. Iā€™ve never thought of anyone else as my parents and havenā€™t been driven to locate anyone. We moved to Southern California as young children and being a stoneā€™s throw from the ocean created a deep need to come back to it as often as possible. But while Boulder and its massive flatirons are my backbone, the ocean is my soul.

That’s so funny because I was born and raised within sight of the Appalachian mountains and I can’t imagine living anywhere else–unless it was to the Rockies!

How long have you been writing? Did you write as a child or is it something you developed a passion for later in life?

I started telling stories at a very young age. Mom wrote them down and I illustrated them. I still have those which are horrible, but I love them. Then in Jr. High I was writing what is now fan fiction with a friend and loving it. But an English teacher told me and my parents that I was failing because I wouldnā€™t learn grammar. I immediately stopped writing. I only learned about this (apparently, I totally wiped the incident from my memory) after I told mom I was going to write and book and she said, ā€œfinallyā€. Then revealed the story.  Iā€™m now in the exact right spot for me.

ā€œWriters should write what they know.ā€ What does this statement mean to you as an author?

This statement makes me so frustrated, both when I first heard and even now when I hear folks agonizing over it. So, Iā€™m going to get on my soap box. We all know lifeā€™s ups/downs, celebrations/heartaches. We all have experiences. That is what we know.

But for the longest time and still today, authors and pundits say I canā€™t write a treasure hunting adventure or chocolate making scene or legal thriller because Iā€™m none of those. Baloney. Research, good solid research and interviews will give us that information. Would I write a hospital driven drama, no, because Iā€™m not interested in that kind of writing. But adventure, danger, various treasures, myths, even some courtroom scenes have all been written by me and apparently are doing well.

I agree with this whole-heartedly! I think when people say “write what you know” what they really mean is write about the forces that would drive a character to leave home and hearth to fight for all he holds dear–whether it be a Hobbit journeying to Mordor or a young man headed off to the trenches in WW1. The means by which you tell the story doesn’t matter as much as the authenticity behind the motives.

Most authors admit to feeling uncomfortable with the degree of self-promotion necessary to be successful. Are there some aspects of social media and self-promotion that make you more comfortable than others? Are there some you avoid like the plague?

I really enjoy the self-promotion that is necessary for both the indie and the traditionally published writer to do. For instance, a blog like this is fun to write. I love to teach writing and use my books (after all I know my stories best) as examples, then see the light come on in an aspiring writerā€™s eyes. I love creating images or memes for my books.

I have a YouTube channel for writers, but Iā€™m getting views from folks who want to know more about how a writer works, not be one. Thatā€™s cool!

Iā€™ve done a lot of interviews on camera and now feel comfortable talking about me.  Now if I only weighed 25lbs. lessā€¦

Itā€™s part of the business, so I figure I might as well enjoy it and of instead of shy away from it, embrace it.

I will definitely have to check out your YouTube Channel! I confess while I enjoy spending time on certain social media platforms, I have no real desire to get in front of a camera, and I admire anyone who does!

Have you ever been intimidated by reviews?

Yes. At first I was scared to look at them and when I found one that was less than complimentary, Iā€™d be totally crushed. Literally couldnā€™t write a new word. Then I realized a couple of things and grew up as a writer, maybe even as a person.

Sometimes people will just not like what you write. Thatā€™s okay. I may want to please everyone, but honestly know I canā€™t. Some people are meanspirited. I feel sorry for them. Some people think theyā€™ll make me a better writer if they point out every flaw.

My approach to reviewing is that 90% of the time you can find some aspect of the book to talk about with positivity. You may not give it 4 or 5 stars, but why trash it? If you hated it, donā€™t buy another one from that author. Life is too short to be mean. Kindness is better. And maybe thatā€™s a Pollyanna way of looking at life, and there are many times when I want to throw something at my TV screen for whatever reason, hey Iā€™m human, but that negative emotion doesnā€™t go beyond my walls.

Do you miss your characters when you come to the end of their story? Do you find ways to write sequels for them or do you become entranced with a new set?

Yes and yes and yes. I spend huge amounts of time building my characters and their stories, their conflicts, their goals. Series allow me to dig deeper, put them into more revealing circumstances. For instance, in my Carswell Adventure series, I had twins, who after a tragedy became total opposites. One more meek, more comfortable by herself than out in the world. The other became an adventure junkie. Stone Of Heaven is about Tori, the city girl who keeps to herself now having to save her adventurous sister from long forgotten Maya gods. The second book Viking Gold brings in the characters again, but we focus on Abby and her quests and how itā€™s driving all the people she loves away. Will she survive this last treasure hunt?

What are your writing goals for 2021? Your personal goals?

Iā€™m releasing Brushed By Betrayal May 5th. Itā€™s the second in the Kahuna Group series. Then come Monday Iā€™m settling down to create my new cozy mystery series. A first in many ways for me. Writing in first person. A cozy series, creating a new ski town, Angelcroft and all its peeps and fun stuff like red-herrings and most of all developing a complicated villainous character motivation. After all mystery readers like the puzzle, so ā€¦. My plan is to have that first book out this coming Fall, worst case before Christmas, since itā€™s set at Christmas. Then to write one or two more a year. I still have my other seriesā€¦yikes, Iā€™m going to be busy.

Personal goals, focus on the important things and say no to the rest. I donā€™t say no easily, but Iā€™m learning.

That’s interesting what you say about plot-driven stories versus character driven, and how you’ve nestled into your groove as a result. And yay for a new cozy mystery series! I love the genre!

Thank you so much for dropping by for the interview and to share a little about your new release!

Bio:

I started writing as a child, really. A few things happened on the way to becoming a published author ā€¦ specifically, a junior high school teacher who told me I couldnā€™t write because I didnā€™t want to study grammar.

That English teacher stopped my writing for years.  But the muse couldnā€™t be denied, and eventually I wrote, a lot, some of it award winning. However, I wasnā€™t really making a career from any of this.

My husband told me repeatedly that independent publishing was becoming a valid way to publish a novel. I didnā€™t believe him, I thought indie meant vanity press.

I couldnā€™t have been more wrong.

I started pursuing this direction seriously, hit the keyboard, learned a litany of new things and published my first novel. My second book became a bestseller, and Iā€™m absolutely on the right course in my life.

Slips of Yew by Carol Shay Hornung: A Dez Duchiene Mystery

Please welcome to the blog Carol Shay Hornung, as she shares a bit about herself and the first in a series of mysteries with Dez Duschiene and his new husband, Stevie.

Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Dez Duchiene is a hospitality professional who dabbles in politics and moves to New York City where he marries architect Stevie Langford and lives happily until a detective knocks on his door, asking about the death of a prominent conservative politician.

Whitney Travers was a former boss and friend, and despite their differing political views, Dez feels compelled to figure out who killed him, despite his husbandā€™s objections. Wisconsin is trying to pass a religious freedom bill that would curtail gay rights, and Stevie is uncomfortable every minute they stay after attending the funeral.

Coming of age during the Act 10 protests that rocked the city in 2011, Dez feels like heā€™s in a familiar fight, one the liberals lost all those years ago. He walks a diplomatic line between the conservatives and liberals to collect information ā€“ but can he solve the mystery and save his marriage before itā€™s too late?

Kindle and Paperback are available on Amazon.

Hello, Carol! Welcome to my blog and thank you for answering my nosy, I mean discerning, questions!  First, please tell us a little about yourself and the kinds of stories you like to write. Would you say there is an underlying theme behind your stories?

Carol Shay Hornung ā€“ Iā€™m a behind-the-scenes media specialist by day ā€“ Iā€™ve worked in radio and print advertising for ā€¦ many years. I went to Ripon College and was delighted to be a part of a co-ed fraternity that condemned hazing and embraced inclusion. As a result, my stories tend to have strong bonds between friends ā€“ found family ā€“ rather than traditional family structures.

What part of the world do you call home? Can you tell us a little about where you grew up and where you live now?

Born in Chicago, but Iā€™ve called Madison, Wisconsin home for most of my life. Four amazing lakes, miles of biking trails, and an inclusive, liberal brand of thinking that I find I canā€™t live without.

How long have you been writing? Did you write as a child or is it something you developed a passion for later in life?

Iā€™ve been a writer since I was twelve, when a movie I loved ended ā€œbadlyā€ and I felt the need to rewrite the ending! Iā€™m always happiest when Iā€™m working on a project and for the last few years Iā€™ve always had something to work on ā€“ few dry spells!

How would you characterize your stories? As romance, erotica, or something entirely different?

I write mainstream/mystery/LGBTQ/Lit ā€¦ I donā€™t really fall in a specific category. I want to take LGBTQ characters away from the supporting roles and make them heroes, the driving forces behind the books, and thereā€™s always a basic mystery to solve. On a mainstream level, things that happen in one book follow through to the next, an overall story arc. I have a love/hate relationship with lit ā€“ I want to employ the same craft techniques of theme and symbolism and character development, but I want to avoid the sadness, angst, and unlikeable heroes that often come along with lit. Good stuff thatā€™s fun, with a dash of glitter. Thatā€™s my category.

Do you have a favorite character that youā€™ve created? Why does this character resonate with you?

OMG. There is no one quite like Dez Duchiene. He came out of nowhere and absolutely insisted on running his first story through NaNo (National Novel Writing Month, held each November) in three weeks, then demanded a second book in December. Iā€™ve found a voice through him that fits my heart and soul. Iā€™ve always been drawn to writing male characters, but my critique group would say ā€œOh, a guy wouldnā€™t say/do that.ā€ So Iā€™d work on strong female characters. ā€œOh, sheā€™s not emotional enough.ā€ Dez came along ā€“ male presenting, with a gender neutral first name, and a husband (which fits my orientation. Stevie is damn fine) ā€“ and Iā€™m suddenly able to do whatever I want with him since he is absolutely not constricted by pre-established gender norms. Heā€™s smart, considerate, snarky, sometimes selfish, extroverted (Iā€™m not), and hates Broadway musicals ā€¦ and I love him.

How often does your real life experience figure into your story telling? Do you base characters or stories on your actual experiences?

Real life always factors into my stories. Each book in the Dez Duchiene series takes place in a specific city ā€“ the first is Madison, the second will be Nashville, TN, and Iā€™m able to work in real locations to make the setting vivid. Plot-wise, I deal with real issues. In Slips of Yew, Stevie is uncomfortable in Wisconsin because he sees it as a red state and feels threatened and unwelcome by the politics. A friend of mine did, in fact say that he didnā€™t want to visit Wisconsin for those reasons. I also explore the psychology of conservatives and liberals interacting which has become more and more of a challenge these days. And going back to hating musicals ā€¦ that came from my stylist who just groaned when I told him I was going to New York City and he said ā€œI donā€™t do the Broadway thing.ā€ What a great characteristic to help smash stereotypes! (Personally, I love musicals. But Dez doesnā€™t need to know that).

Editing: love it or hate it?

I delight in editing. I stress over getting the initial story written. Iā€™m a mostly-pantser in that when I get an idea, Iā€™ll write the first draft as simply and quickly as I can to lock down the basic story ā€“ in a way, I write a wordy outline with scenes and character development! Then I go back and flesh out the details and descriptions, enhance the subplots and make sure everything weaves together nicely. Finally, I go through and line edit the book in the extreme ā€“ I search for all those annoying crutch words and actions (look, shrug, sigh, turn, etc.) and replace them with meaningful actions and/or internalization. A few more read-throughs to make sure itā€™s smooth and logical (had a character put on shoes three times in one scene ā€“ that needed help!) and get it ready to be published.

Do you miss your characters when you come to the end of their story? Do you find ways to write sequels for them or do you become entranced with a new set?

My first two books Asperger Sunset, and Ghost of Heffron College, were stand-alone books. I had little sparks of ideas for possible sequels but nothing grabbed me. I was done. The Dez Duchiene mysteries are designed to be a series, and the characters grow and change as the books progress through time. In the first book Dez and Stevie are newlyweds, by the fifth book they are approaching middle age and all the experiences that come with that. I had books 1 and 2 written, with a solid idea for book 3 and my husband and I were on vacation in downtown Chicago. We were walking along Lake Michigan and he points and says ā€œthis is where the body washes up.ā€ By the time we reached Buckingham Fountain, I had dozens of ideas racing through my head and had to frantically type it all into my phone so I wouldnā€™t forget any of it! Each book is a stand-alone mystery but they will be in a specific order, with events that happen in one book informing the events in the next. I love these characters and am perfectly content to write these stories as long as I can. Itā€™s nice knowing I donā€™t have to say goodbye. I would definitely miss them.

In addition to Slips of Yew, Iā€™ve published a paranormal mystery, The Ghost of Heffron College, and a more traditional mystery with a protagonist with autism, Asperger Sunset. All three books can be ordered through your favorite local bookstore or ordered from Amazon. Bring on the Holiday Stories: New Releases for the 2020 Season!

Anyone who knows me knows I am a complete sucker for holiday stories and movies. This year I feel the pull even harder than usual. I want those small town Christmas stories, complete with snow, second-chances, and happily ever afters. I want the Scrooge-like billionaire to find the true meaning of Christmas–and true love along the way. I want lovers to meet across the ages–at Regency house parties, Victorian gatherings, and through magical time-traveling events. I want heroines to throw caution to the winds to take a chance on life–and love. I want to see mysterious seniors offer excellent advice and give nudges for lovers to move in the right direction–closer to each other. I crave mad dashes through airports (something I don’t ever want in real life), crowds parting to reveal one’s true love after you thought you’d missed them, and unexpected proposals to the applause of the unplanned audience.

I suspect I’d pay for a holiday-themed streaming channel. I know I feel the urge to start reading and watching holiday entertainment with the first crunch of dead leaves underfoot in October until the daffodils bloom in March. But I’m also a believer in celebrating the holiday at hand before galloping off to the next one. So now that Thanksgiving is over here in the US, I feel completely justified in doing my annual seasonal new release showcase. Here, in no particular order, are a list of happy-making stories for you to check out this season with something for everyone, from sweet to spicy and everything in between.

Holiday anthologies are my personal catnip and The Heart of the Season: An ATA Anthology is full of heartwarming stories across genres about finding love and joy at this time of year.

THE HEART OF THE SEASON is a jolt of joy you cannot wait to unwrap for the holidays. Let your heart be merry and bright as you dive into this multi-genre collection of short stories centered on the themes of love and joy during the holidays.

Explore a foreign cafƩ, wild mountain ranges, big city lights, and homey firesides. Keep turning the pages to read the stories of love, redemption, sacrifice, and kindness reminding you that THE HEART OF THE SEASON lives within us all!

Can a private investigator recover a family’s stolen gifts?

Could kittens help create a love connection?

Will a widow rekindle her love for the holidays and find romance once more?

Christmas Cookies at the Cat CafƩ: a Furrever Friends Sweet Romance

by Kris Bock

Christmas isnā€™t the same since Dianeā€™s kids grew up and her husband died ā€“ so when her high school sweetheart comes back to town, maybe itā€™s time for some cozy new holiday traditions.

Diane had a great marriage and a wonderful life. Now sheā€™s a widow at 53, and her grown children are encouraging her to slow down and do less ā€“ but she wants more. She starts planning for a new career by arranging a photo shoot at the cat cafĆ© her daughters run. Unfortunately, the cats wonā€™t cooperate.

Rick loved Diane in high school, but he chose to travel the world while she settled down with another man. Now heā€™s back for a visit, but heā€™s not planning to stay ā€“ even if Diane still tugs at him. Heā€™ll help her get what she wants from life, and then heā€™ll say goodbye.

Rick temps Diane to quit her job, sell her house, and travel. But she canā€™t leave the people she loves so dearly, the family that might still need her just a little bit. Diane tempts Rick to end his wandering ways, but he canā€™t simply step into the hole left by her husbandā€™s death. As the weeks pass from Thanksgiving to Christmas, the holiday season brings out complicated emotions.

Can Diane and Rick find a way to make a new life together while holding onto the best parts of the past? They’ll need more than attraction and affection. They might even need a Christmas miracle.

The Furrever Friends Sweet Romance series features the workers and customers at a small-town cat cafƩ, and the adorable cats and kittens looking for their forever homes. Each book is a complete story with a happy ending for one couple (and maybe more than one rescued cat). These sweet romances will leave you with the warm feeling of cuddling a purring cat.

Excerpt

The cat did not want to wear a hat.

ā€œCome on, Miles, itā€™s for your own good,ā€ Diane muttered. ā€œIā€™m not trying to insult your feline dignity. Iā€™m trying to find you a forever home. Wouldnā€™t that be nice?ā€

Once again, Diane got the cat settled on a table against the autumn backdrop. Miles seemed perfectly content to sit there and watch the proceedings. But as soon as Diane tried to put the sunflower hat on the catā€™s head, he dropped and flailed as if touched by flaming thorns rather than soft felt. Miles wrestled with the hat as Diane rushed to wake up her cell phone. Maybe she could get something cute, with the cat chewing a sunflower petal.

Diane aimed the camera. The hat sailed to the floor.

Miles leapt off the table, streaked across the room, climbed one of the cat trees, and calmly perched on a platform staring out the window, pointedly ignoring her.

ā€œThat Cat in the Hat book is nonsense,ā€ Diane said. ā€œI used to get a diaper on a squirming baby in under a minute. Youā€™d think I could get one cat to wear a lousy hat or at least pose nicely.ā€

Medical Humorous Contemporary Romance

Parker Roy grew up in the middle of four brothers and has lived with enough testosterone to last her a lifetime. Sheā€™s finally moved out and made a life of her own. Excerpt

ā€œPleased to meet you, Julian Murphy.ā€ His hand was warm around hers, and when he moved his thumb in a subtle caress, a shiver went down her spine. ā€œJulian Murphy,ā€ she murmured. She tilted her head and narrowed her eyes at him. ā€œAre you a doctor?ā€

Julian nodded. ā€œI am.ā€

ā€œAn allergist at Gateway General?ā€

ā€œGuilty.ā€

Parker pulled her hand back and put her hands on her hips. ā€œI tried to get a referral to see you. You refused.ā€

His lips twitched. ā€œYes, thatā€™s true.ā€

ā€œWhy? Dr. Corkie said sheā€™d never seen it in all the years sheā€™s practiced medicine.ā€

Julian put his hands in his pockets. ā€œWell, thereā€™s a rule against doctors dating patients. Itā€™s ill-advised and frowned upon by the College of Physicians of Ontario.ā€

Parker scoffed. ā€œWell, good for you. What does that have to do with me?ā€

ā€œParker, would you like to have dinner with me?ā€

Title: First Class Christmas

Author: Katy Eeten

Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Blurb:

When Mandy Brockman flies home from her friend’s destination wedding, her heart is on empty at the thought of spending Christmas alone. It doesn’t help that her ex is on the plane, seemingly unaffected by their breakup. But the kind-hearted man seated next to her seems to have it all togetherā€”and he’s handsome to boot. She knows her emotional healing won’t come in the form of another guy, but will the source of this man’s peace and joy help Mandy find the Christmas she’s looking for?

CJ Hawkins is captivated by the beautiful, feisty woman he meets on his flight. The only thing is, she’s fresh out of a relationship, and he has no interest in being anyone’s rebound. But the more he learns about Mandy, the more he’s drawn to her unique mixture of compassion and spunk.

Can he figure out how to make their relationship take off before this First Class Christmas is grounded forever?

Excerpt:

Once the bill was squared away, they stood to leave, retrieving their coats from the coat check on the way out. The thought of leaving CJ only to return to her lonely apartment brought the same sense of emptiness theyā€™d been talking about earlier. She tried to shake it off. Out in the parking lot, he walked her to her car.

ā€œIā€™d love to see you again, but I have plans tonight. Althoughā€¦ā€ his voice trailed off.

Mandy narrowed her eyes. What wasnā€™t he saying? ā€œAlthoughā€¦?ā€

A small smile crept to his face. ā€œYou should totally come with.ā€

She was intrigued. ā€œWhere to?ā€ They arrived at her car, and she turned to face him with her back against the driverā€™s side back door.

He waggled his eyebrows. ā€œTo fill that emptiness in your heart.ā€

She tilted her head, giving him a dubious look. ā€œWhat makes you so sure?ā€

CJ placed one hand on the car behind her on her left, and then another on her right, pinning her in place between his arms. Their bodies were only inches away from each other. ā€œDo you trust me?ā€ She could hear the smile in his voice.

Taking a deep breath, Mandy kept her gaze on CJā€™s. The truth was, she did. But that fact scared her a little. She pressed her lips together before responding. ā€œYes.ā€

He gave a flirty lift to his eyebrows. ā€œGood.ā€

SLEIGH BELLS RING by Jessica James

BLURB:

Best friends go their separate ways, only to end up on the same ranch at Christmas. A best friend, second chance, cowboy Christmas love story set on a ranch in Montana.

Returning to her familyā€™s Montana ranch after a ten-year absence, Jordyn Dunaway pitches in to help her mother create the special holiday magic for which the exclusive ranch is renowned. But when she discovers that her best friend growing upā€”the man she has never forgottenā€”is employed as a ranch hand, the holiday season turns into something she never imagined.

Chad Devlin was falling into a deep abyss after being medically discharged from the military. When his old employer invited him back as a ranch hand, he found himself recovering both physically and mentally…that is until he was blindsided by the return of the ranch ownerā€™s daughter.

The rocky relationship of the former best friends takes a back seat as the future of the family-owned ranch is threatened. If Jordyn and Chad donā€™t put their painful pasts behind them, they might lose the ranch they both call home. Can misunderstandings, mistrust, and lost years be forgotten when the magic of Christmas is in the air?

Find out with the help of beautiful mountain vistas, warm Western hospitality, and the magical meaning of a special sleigh bell that ties both Jordyn and Chad to the pastā€”and the future.

SPECIAL NOTE: Author Jessica James has partnered with the family-owned business Magical Bells to offer a 20 percent discount off their beautiful sleigh bells. No need for a coupon, the total will be fixed on checkout with this link: https://magicalbells.com/discount/SleighBellsRing

EXCERPT:

Chad Devlin leaned one broad shoulder against the porch post of the bunkhouse as a limousine pulled through the elegant arched gateway. ā€œAnother guest just arrived for the Christmas gala,ā€ he said to no one in particular.

ā€œAnother city slicker you mean.ā€ The man standing beside him sent a slug of tobacco onto the dirt near the steps as the car drove slowly up the gravel driveway to the main house about a hundred yards away.

Chad lifted the hat off his brow and scowled at the brown smudge on the ground, but didnā€™t say anything. Judd had been warned by Mrs. Dunaway about spitting anywhere he pleased, any number of times. It wasnā€™t exactly the type of thing that wealthy folks wanted to see when they were getting away from it all on this high-priced luxury ranch in the middle-of-nowhere, Montana. And it wasnā€™t behavior that one would expect from a man who was in charge of dozens of ranch hands.

With his eyes glued on the woman getting out of the car, Chad took a step forward, causing the coffee in his mug to slurp over the top. ā€œIs that Jordyn Dunaway?ā€

Judd let out a whistle as the long-legged blonde accepted the suitcase handed to her by the driver. ā€œIā€™ve only seen pictures.ā€ Judd leaned forward and squinted as if to lessen the distance between them. ā€œYou know her?ā€

Chad grew silent and merely shrugged, angry that heā€™d expressed any emotion and let down his guard. He hadnā€™t seen Jordyn Dunaway since sheā€™d left for a job in New York City more than a decade ago. Was that really her? Had she really come back home after all this time?

The woman paused on the porch and swept the golden tumble of hair off her shoulders, an action that flaunted a regal confidence and stately poise. Chad mumbled under his breath as another splash of hot coffee breached the top of the trembling mug, burning his hand.

Trying to slow the pace of his heart, Chad looked away and took a deep breath. Would Jordyn remember their last night together? Would she even remember him after traveling around the world and being away from the ranch for so long?

His gaze went back to the main house, but the door had already closed behind her.

Squeezing his temples, Chad tried to stop the memories. He even closed his eyes in a futile attempt to block the images that were branded in his mind as the bestā€”and the worstā€”moments of his life.

Divorced dad Birley Haynes is too busy raising his children and running his familyā€™s music academy to start a relationship. Then Harmony Holdich, his high school sweetheart, returns home to Willow Springs, Vermont for Christmas and falls into his bed. She brings light and fun back into his life, but he canā€™t brush aside the threatening incidents around his workplace.

When the threats rise, how will Birley keep his children safe and convince Harmony to give love another chance?

Reuniting with the man who broke her heart has never felt so right.

Excerpt

Dear God. His heart slammed harder. Heā€™d died and gone to Heaven.

Harmony stretched her arms above her head and danced in the middle of the living room. Her hips pulsated with the beat of the music. Twisty locks of her hair bounced around her shoulders. She winked, then glided her hands across her breasts and stomach, daring his gaze to follow.

Birley licked his lips. The organ pressing against his zipper throbbed. Sweat slicked his nape. He dropped his scarf beside her purse, jacket, and beanie on the coffee table.

ā€œDance with me?ā€

Her husky entreaty ricocheted through him like a ping-pong ball. How could he deny her? He gripped her waist. She slid her arms around him. They swayed, their bodies a scant inch apart. She nuzzled his neck, her breath fanning his skin. His hair prickled. The air crackled around them. He shuddered and held her tighter.

ā€œIā€™ve missed this.ā€

His chest heaved. He struggled to fill his lungs with air. ā€œDancing?ā€

ā€œDancing with you.ā€ Harmony stroked his clean-shaven jaw. ā€œIā€™m sorry things didnā€™t work out with you and Susannah, but I wouldnā€™t trade this moment for anything.ā€

Oh, God. He kissed her and swept his tongue past her parting lips. Delicious. The taste of chocolate and wine clung to her breath. He nibbled and licked the smooth slope of her neck.

ā€œBirley, yes.ā€ She ducked her head and claimed his mouth with hers. Then she feathered kisses across his face. ā€œI need your hands, your mouth, your scent all over me. Take me, Birley. Hard, soft, I donā€™t care.ā€

Fuck. Her breathy plea wrapped around his heart and shot blood to his groin. She eased back, drawing him with her. The wall halted her retreat, and he trapped her between it and his body. Their tongues dueled and teeth clanked. Heat sizzled through his veins and pulsed through every organ. Her body writhed against his. Was she trying to drive him mad? He snapped open the fasteners of her pants and slid his finger beneath the waistband of her insulated leggings. Silk brushed his skin, then he slipped into her warmth.

The Last Christmas by Seelie Kay

Release Date: December 11, 2020

Publisher: Extasy Books

Romantic Suspense, Contemporary Romance, three flames

Why did you write ā€œThe Last Christmas?ā€

My father is 94-years-old and as you might expect, has had a number of serious medical, age-related events. Each time, we were told to prepare for his death. Each time, he survived. The fact was, my Dad wasnā€™t ready to die. And his children and his grandchildren werenā€™t ready to let him go either. So I started thinking about terminal diagnoses and how they are really a best guess, not a guarantee. That, of course, led to thoughts how a terminal diagnosis often causes people to give up and prematurely mourn the death of the person who is ill. I wondered how that impacted the outcome. And because I was preparing to write a holiday book, I also started thinking about the power of family, and how, time after time, families are capable of creating miracles.

That led me to ā€œThe Last Christmas.ā€ Christmas truly is a time for miracles, and thought it important that everyone be able to experience one through the tale of the Wright Family.

Blurb:

When the doctors say thereā€™s no hope, Santa begs to differ. After all, he claims, miracles are love combined with action to get the desired result. And at Christmas time, everyone deserves a miracle!

David Wright is dying from cancer. He is not expected to see another Christmas. At least thatā€™s what the medical professionals say. Fortunately, Santa begs to differ. After all, modern medicine is nothing more than a best guess. Santa believes anything is possible until you give up. When Santa tells Davidā€™s wife, Joan, that heaven is full and she has to keep her husband alive, she is beside herself. She has no medical skills. How can she save anyoneā€™s life? Set your skepticism aside as Santa embraces a family already mourning their fatherā€™s terminal diagnosis and teaches them that a Christmas miracle doesnā€™t always require heavenly intervention. Sometimes, all it takes is a family with enough love to create their own. As Santa says, a true miracle is when love combines with action to get the desired results. And only humans are capable of that. Will Santaā€™s words fall on deaf ears? Or will Team Wright find a way to save their fatherā€™s life?

Excerpt:

Itā€™s not about you, itā€™s about him, Joan,ā€ a grumbly voice said. ā€œYouā€™re looking at this all wrong.ā€

Joan turned so fast she almost lost her balance. She glared at the old man who had spoken. He was around seventy, with ruddy cheeks and twinkling blue eyes. And thick white hair. Lots of white hair. Flowing over his shoulders, winding up in a very lush beard. On top of his head was perched a brightly colored red knit hat. She frowned. ā€œWait a minute. Youā€™re Santa Claus. Without the red suit, but clearly, youā€™re him. Iā€™d know you anywhere.ā€

The man bowed and with a smile, said, ā€œAt your service.ā€ He gestured toward a park across the street. ā€œLetā€™s take a walk.ā€

ā€œOh, no. Iā€™m not going anywhere with you.ā€ Joan shook her head. ā€œI didnā€™t mean you actually were Santa Claus. Everyone knows he doesnā€™t exist. I just meant you looked like him. Youā€™re just a man who looks like him. I donā€™t know you. Why would Iā€¦ā€ She glared at him. ā€œYouā€™re not even wearing a red suit. And since when has Santa taken up armchair psychiatry?ā€  She ran a hand through her blonde hair. ā€œI must be hallucinating.ā€ Despite her objections, she followed him across the street.

Santa laughed. ā€œMy dear, I have been dispensing advice since I was old enough to talk and make people listen. God chose my role a long time ago and I have gotten very good at it.ā€ He looked toward the heavens. ā€œSorry, old boy. Still working on that humility!ā€ He chuckled. ā€œMan never stops reminding me.ā€ He smiled at Joan. ā€œDo you sense any ill-intentions from me? Of course not. Iā€™m Santa. All I want to do is talk.ā€

Joan reached out and touched his shoulder.

He laughed again. A laugh that came directly from his belly. ā€œYes, Iā€™m real. Well, as real as a centuries-old spirit gets. I even eat all those cookies children leave me each year. And let me tell you, thatā€™s a heavenly feat.ā€ Again, he looked skyward. ā€œYes, sir, I am well aware that borders on gluttony. A sin. You know darn well it has nothing to do with gluttony and everything to do with the magic of Christmas, an affirmation that Santa is real. I do it for the children.ā€ He smiled at Joan. ā€œSometimes, He gets a little overbearing with his angels.ā€

He smirked. ā€œEven God has his faults. He is by no means perfect.ā€ A strong wind swirled through the plaza, nearly catching his knitted cap. He clapped his hand on his head to hold it down. He whispered, ā€œAnd he doesnā€™t take criticism too well, either.ā€

Joan stared at the man. Surely, she was losing it. Santa a spirit, an angel? He and God didnā€™t even travel in the same circles. She shook her head, trying to make the hallucination go away.

Santa sighed. ā€œI know, I know. Youā€™ve been taught that Iā€™m not real. That Iā€™m a myth. Thatā€™s a rumor started by Satan himself, the old devil. He canā€™t stand the fact that people embrace the goodness in the world. And that I spread good cheer. He would much rather unleash a plague and make people miserable. He hates Christmas. He hates that the birth of Christ is celebrated, and his birth, well, is not. He really canā€™t stand the fact that love binds people so tightly during the holidays.ā€ Santa shook his fist toward the ground. ā€œThe fool pouts all through the holidays.ā€ He then sat up straight and gazed at Joan. ā€œChristmas is really about love, you know. All kinds of love. The type of love heā€™ll never have. Love of family, love of children, love ofā€”ā€

ā€œWhat the heck do you want?ā€ Joan blurted. ā€œPeople are starting to stare.ā€

Love comes in many shapes

Blurb

The hopeless romantic believes that a soulmate exists for each of us. That there is one person who makes us feel how good it is to love them. For some couples, things trigger them to push that love away. They find out too late theyā€™ve lost true-love. Sometimes genuine love deserves a second-chance at the happy ending that eluded them the first time.

Hereā€™s a chance to read the work of talented writers you may not have read before. Within these pages, there are blends of tender, often moving and thought-provoking stories.

The Holiday Mermaid, a seasonal fantasy romance by Alice Renaud: Adam fell for surfer girl Rowena the second he saw her. But just as their summer fling was becoming serious, she left him without any explanation. Now, with Christmas just a few days away, sheā€™s backā€¦ and Adam discovers that sheā€™s a shape-shifting mermaid, from a Clan that hates humans. Can he love her as she is? Bishop’s Gambit #MFRWHooks and Prizes

Yesterday was the big release day for Bishop’s Gambit (Redclaw Origins2)! Bishop and Knight are back and in more hot water than ever!

Redclaw Origins: The year is 1955. Rebel without a Cause and The Seven Year Itch are playing in the  movie theaters. The Chevy Bel Air is the most popular car in America. Gas is 25 cents a gallon and you can get a hotel room for $4 bucks. This flirty, fun series takes us back to the beginning and shows us how Redclaw Security got started.

In the award-winning Bishop Takes Knight, we met Rhett Bishop, a former socialite desperately seeking work. She lands a job at Redclaw Security, a firm that’s not all that it seems. A routine assignment turns deadly when tracking down missing scientist, Dr. Peter Knight, unleashes a pack of wolf-shifters on their trail. Toss in rival shifter gangs all searching for a cache of mysterious artifacts of great power, and Bishop and Knight are lucky to escape with their lives.

In Bishop’s Gambit, still stinging from being sidelined after the debacle of her first mission, Rhett has a lot to prove. Which is why she accepts her newest assignment: pose as a married couple with Peter Knight to investigate strange happenings in an upscale 1950s suburban development. When malice is served with a smile and a slice of apple pie, it’s not hard to see why Rhett might prefer to face down a horde of angry shifters!

Excerpt:

Wait!ā€

His footsteps crunched on the gravel path as he hurried to catch up, but I ignored him and continued walking.

He drew abreast, stuffing his empty lunch sack into his pocket as he hurried along. ā€œDoes this mean youā€™re saying no?ā€

Pulling to an abrupt stop, I forced him to brake as well or risk running into me. I punctuated every word with a poke to his chest. ā€œStill. Havenā€™t. Been. Asked.ā€

His eyes flew open wide before a sly grinā€”one I had a hard time resistingā€”curved his mouth. ā€œOh. I canā€™t exactly go down on one knee here, but Rhett Bishop, would you do me the honor of being my fake wife and partner in an undercover investigation?ā€

His impish expression said he still didnā€™t understand why I was mad.

Bishop’s Gambit Release Day and Launch Party!

It’s here! Today is the day Bishop’s Gambit, the next installment of the award-winning Redclaw Origins series, is available to download!

I can’t tell you how excited I am about sharing this story with you. It was a long time coming–I’d planned for an earlier release date, but then the pandemic hit and life changed for everyone. You’d think that would mean more time for writing, but like so many people, it upended our household, and forced us to make some tough choices.

I’m pleased as punch to be able to release it now, however!

The old gang is back: Ryker, Mr. J, Miss Climpson, Em, and of course, little Captain, the terrier with a terrible secret. To redeem herself in Redclaw Security’s eyes after the debacle of her first mission, probationary agent Rhett Bishop must undertake a delicate assignment: pose as a married couple with Dr. Peter Knight to investigate a series of paranormal circumstances in an upscale 1950s suburban neighborhood! Here, malice is served with a smile and a slice of apple pie. No wonder Rhett would rather face down a horde of wolf-shifters than deal with the Ladies Association…

It’s the X-Files meets Leave it to Beaver in Redclaw Origins Book 2.

Did I mention there was only one bed?

Cover Reveal and Pre-Order Links for Bishop’s Gambit!

I don’t know about you, but I never have the patience to do a true “cover reveal” the way some people do. When I get my gorgeous new cover, I want to shout about it from the rooftops! I was pretty good this time–I let my newsletter list have the image and links almost three whole days before everyone else–but I can’t wait any longer! Without further ado, I present to you Bishop’s Gambit (Redclaw Origins Book Two)

Doesn’t Reese Dante do amazing work? I just adore this cover!

Poor Rhett. Evicted from her apartment for hiding a dog from her landlady, and still on probation for the way things turned out in Bishop Takes Knight, she opts to take on an undercover assignment where she and Knight must pose as a married couple to investigate inexplicable events in an upscale suburban community. Instead of fending off wolf-shifters and her father’s former mob contacts, she’s joining the country club, playing bridge, and baking cakes for the Ladies Association meetings. Okay, she’s buying bakery store cakes and passing them off as her own, but still.

Give her a bad guy to shoot any day.

At least she still has her trusty ray gun. And if Redclaw’s main competitor, Rian Stirling, is hanging about, there must be something to these unusual activities, right?

She’ll just have to put her budding relationship with Knight on hold until they solve this mystery. After all, they’re professionals here. Even if there is only one bed.

Pre-order Bishop’s Gambit from  Amazon and these other retailers.

The Kind of List You Want to Be On

I had a kind of crappy day today.

The odd thing is, nothing truly bad happened. Certainly not by 2020’s standards. I had a minor disappointment with the upcoming launch of Bishop’s Gambit. Very minor. On the scale of pain and suffering, it was right up there with a stubbed toe–the kind that makes you curse and hop around on one foot but then moments later, you’ve forgotten all about it. Or at least I should have. Instead, I let my disappointment escalate into a mini-meltdown. It wasn’t until later that I realized the writing setback was a safe thing for me to get upset about. There are a lot of upsetting and distressing things going on right now and yet I focused on the toe-stub instead of the car crash, if you catch my drift.

So it was with great pleasure that I received a message from author Beth Linton with a link to a blog post she’d written listing “10 Best Romance Novels.” I was delighted to find Bishop Takes Knight there! I definitely needed that boost today! It reminded me that I’d recently run across another such list from Barbara Strickland in her Chilling Corner in August, that also counted Bishop Takes Knight among her recommended reads.

I have to tell you, these posts pulled me right out of my pity party. Especially because they also recommended such delicious reads I couldn’t wait to add them to my TBR stack!

And speaking of adding to the TBR stack, I’m going to be doing a cover reveal for Bishop’s Gambit as soon as I have a pre-order link! Yay! So stay tuned. It won’t be long now!
